WFLA Inter-League Match: Cheshire vs Greater Manchester

Keith Whittle & Tony Roberts (late replacement for Reg Simpson) played for Cheshire West and Fran Perez for Cheshire East in their first Inter-League matches against Greater Manchester at Heywood Sports Village on Wednesday 8th November, 2023.

Cheshire West played Greater Manchester over 65s, the current Inter-League champions in thier first game and lost 1-0 to a harshly awarded penalty. Cheshire East drew 2-2 versus the GMWFC Over 60s.

The second game saw Cheshire West lose 3-1 against GMWFC over 65s, despite taking an early lead. Cheshire East lost 2-1 in thier match.

Both teams did exceptionally well, especially considering it was our first competitive match together.

Cheshire West Vs Cheshire East

Two players from NWFC represented Cheshire West in a friendly game versus Cheshire East.  This was a preparation game for the upcoming fixtures against two teams from the Greater Manchester League.  The West Team also included players from Neston and Chester.

Reg Simpson and Tony Roberts a late call up as replacement for the unavailable Keith Whittle, represented West, in a very close, competitive game, played in the right spirit.  West took an early lead and despite creating many chances could not add to the score. East were restricted to long range shots well handled by the West Keeper. Pete the East Striker was proving to be a handful and finally had a clear sight of goal and hit an unstoppable  thunderbolt into the top corner to make it 1-1.  The game remain level even after 10 minutes extra time was played, which in the end was the fair result.  Fran Perez filled in in for Cheshire East and the Game was very well reffed by our own Bob Cadwallader.

The games have been organised by Fran Perez with assistance from the Cheshire FA.  Next week East Cheshire and West Cheshire will play two games against Greater Manchester.

The game was very enjoyable and Fran has tried to include players from all the Cheshire teams and the age span was incredible ranging from early 50 to over 80 and you could not tell in the way the game was played.

This really is the spirit of Walking Football.

Selected to Play for Cheshire

We are delighted to announce Reg Simpson & Keith Whittle have been selected to play for Cheshire walking football team against a Greater Manchester / Lancashire walking football team at Heywood Lancs on Wednesday 8th November.

Mick Wood - Honorary Member

The club presented a Honorary Membership Award to Mick Wood at our afternoon 'social' at Hartford Cricket Club.  This award is in recognition to Mick reaching the age of 80 and still be playing walking football every Wednesday.  This award will also entitle Mick to be able to play all future games of walking football with the club for free!

Mick replied on Facebook: Thank you all for your very kind words. Great to see so many at the cricket club lunch yesterday. The club will have been in existence 9 years come January, and from very humble beginnings, has now grown, I understand, into the largest Walking Football club in Cheshire, and no doubt many other places as well. Any “newcomers” to the club who attended the lunch yesterday, will be in no doubt that they have made the right decision. Show me another club anywhere, where you get such tremendous value for money, and of course the three ‘f’s , Friendship. Fitness and Fun. Here’s to the future…..

Crown Green Bowls Cup 2023

On Thursday 17th August, the 2nd annual Northwich Walking FC bowls evening organised by John Mitchell was held at Hartford Bowls club. Unfortunately due to other commitments reigning champion Paul Eccleston couldn't make it defend his trophy, however a manageable 14 entrants attended who had a mixture of experience ranging from none to local league players. The weather was kind once again and the 1st round draw brought up some enticing match ups, most notably Phil Burgess vs Dave Bradburne the two bookies' favourites.

Phil progressed through to the next round, whilst Dave went into the Plate competition where he later claimed victory in that final. Phil was knocked out by Harrie Kandola this year, who lost to Dave "the dark horse" Woods in the final.

As the darkness fell and the competition ended a trip to the Red Lion for a beer or two completed an enjoyable evening.

Retirements from NWFC!

The club would like to thank Mick Pye and Mike Dobell who have been a part of our club for many years, who have both decided to retire from playing walking football.

Congratulations to the 60+ Team for winning the first Cheshire FA League Tournament held at Moss Farm.  The multi-touch walking football games were held over 3 days during April, May & June all at Moss Farm and the teams entered included Altrincham, Chester Northgate, Stockport CF, Neston Nomads and Liscard Brazil.

In the sweltering heat of Moss Farm 10 elite athletes took to the pitch to represent Northwich Walking Football Over 60’s in the third and last round of the Cheshire FA Walking Football League. The challenge was to overtake Altrincham FC at the top of the table. The current standings after two rounds left us 3 points behind but with a better goal difference. There were 3 games to play with a crunch game against Altrincham included.

A tight first game against Chester resulted in a 0-0 draw and although we had the better chances we just couldn’t score against an in form Chester keeper. Altrincham however lost their first game against Neston Nomads which reduced our deficit slightly but we still needed to beat Altrincham.

They were next up and within a minute we went 1-0 up with a crisp finish from our captain, Keith Whittle. This undoubtably gave us great confidence and we then cruised into a 3-0 lead with further goals from Keith who completed a hat-trick within the first half. The team talk at half time was probably the easiest we have ever encountered. Just keep it tight for the second half and the win would be ours. With a controlled second half performance the job was completed by keeping the ball as much as possible and we ran out comfortable 3-0 winners and even had the luxury of a dubious decision of the referee ruling out a penalty for us expertly put away by John Robison only to be chalked off for the one step rule.

Our last game was against Stockport County. We were on a roll! After another Keith Whittle goal in the first half two further goals by Pete Yoxall sealed another 3-0 victory and the title. An impressive 13 goals scored and just the 1 conceded in 11 games and no losses!

This concluded the first Cheshire Walking Football League with Northwich Over 60’s as champions. The next league will run from September until next May and be played monthly in various other locations in the county.
